Oh the Iowa Winter

Oh, the Iowa Winter! As our bodies yearn to stay in and cozy up for the colder months, most of us must face the elements and go to work. At some point in time, it is likely that we will or someone in our family will end up with a cold or the flu.

There are so many herbal remedies that work for varying symptoms. Echinacea, boneset, mullein, elderberry, to name just a few, (all of which we carry at Journey Health Shop). There is one concoction, however, that is always the first one I make at the first sign of a cold. I’ve given it to many people, who swear by it. It is easy to make, as the ingredients are found in most kitchens.

Cold and Flu Tea

1”to 2” piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced

2-3 slices lemon

3-4 cloves of garlic, peeled and smashed

Cayenne Pepper*

Honey*

Optional Ingredients: 3-4 whole cloves, 4-5 cardamom pods, ½ stick of cinnamon

Put all the above ingredients in one pint of water, and simmer on low for 15-20 minutes. Strain, pour into a cup and add as much cayenne pepper as you can stand, and honey to taste. Drink a cupful at least every 2 hours.

What I love about this recipe is that anyone can make it. I consider the garlic, ginger, lemon and cayenne the essential ingredients. And most of these can be purchased fresh at Simply Nourished in Clear Lake. But whatever someone has on hand is fine – it’s better than not making anything at all. Stop into Journey Health. We’ll share more natural natural cold and flu season remedies.
